ABOUT US

Independent Engineering
Design & Analysis Consultancy | UK | Established 1992

PTL is an independent engineering consultancy led by highly skilled engineers. PTL is based in the UK and has an international client base spanning manufacturers, inventors, startups and investors. We provide multi-physics analysis, advanced design, controls and development support across engines, powertrains, bespoke electric motors, energy systems and complex machinery.

Our purpose is straightforward: to reduce technical uncertainty early in your program, so that your most important engineering decisions are better informed and easier to justify, whether the next step is concept evaluation, prototype planning, validation, funding or production development.

Why clients come to PTL

Manufacturers, inventors, startups and investors come to PTL when they need credible engineering input before committing further time, cost or programme risk. We provide the engineering judgement and technical evidence needed to move forward with greater confidence, from first concept through to prototype, validation and production-ready release.

We work directly with clients. There are no disconnected departments, no account managers standing between you and the technical team. Every engagement is led by experienced engineers who understand how concept decisions, design detail, analysis quality, validation strategy, controls integration, rig testing and supply-chain practicality affect the overall outcome.

Disciplined engineering

PTL brought disciplined engineering and practical manufacturing insight. Together we transformed an EV battery enclosure concept from a high-cost, machined design into a manufacturable fabricated solution, using a smart mix of machining and welding. The result was lower cost, lighter weight, and a design we could build repeatedly at volume.

OUR HISTORY

Where it all began

1992

The team behind PTL has worked together since 1992, when John McClelland and Jean-Pierre Pirault founded Sirius Engineering Ltd. The business was immediately acquired by AVL List GmbH and renamed AVL Powertrain Engineering Ltd, which became AVL’s first overseas engineering facility.

During that period, the team delivered powertrains for cars, trucks and motorcycles, many of which remained in production. AVL’s single-cylinder research engines were also designed in those offices and supplied into engine laboratories and universities worldwide.

1999

In 1999, AVL relocated its UK engineering operations to the Midlands. The bulk of the Shoreham team remained in place and formed Powertrain Technology Ltd. That same year, PTL partnered with Lotus Engineering to develop the concept and production design of a family of passenger car engines.

2002 –
Present

Following the successful completion of that programme in 2002, PTL established a long-term relationship with Southwest Research Institute in Texas, a relationship that continues today.

That history still shapes how we work: a business built on long-term engineering programmes, deep technical capability and enduring client relationships.

A business built by engineers

PTL is owned and led by the engineers who do the work. Clients are not passed between departments or held at arm’s length from the technical team. They work directly with experienced engineers, personally invested in the outcome.

As an independent consultancy, that creates a more direct and accountable way of working, with closer alignment between the engineering challenge and the support we provide.

20+ years with Southwest Research Institute

One of PTL’s most important long-term technical relationships is with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). Founded in 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, SwRI is an independent, nonprofit contract research and development organisation, widely recognised for multidisciplinary engineering and applied R&D across government and industry.

PTL’s relationship with SwRI has run for more than two decades. Through that partnership, PTL has supported scores of light, medium and heavy-duty engine production design and development programmes all over the world.

That work has spanned the concept and detailed design of production and research powertrains, electrified systems, single-cylinder engines and test rigs including the application of complex casting design, cranktrain and valvetrain development, advanced CAE, performance simulation, lubrication and bearing development, research in advanced battery cooling and specialist procurement services.

The partnership reflects PTL’s ability to contribute over the long term to complex, high-value engineering programmes alongside one of the world’s most established applied R&D organisations.

Long-term partnerships that strengthen delivery

PTL has always placed a high value on close working relationships with customers, suppliers and technical partners, because those relationships are part of how we deliver better outcomes.

For prototype and development programmes, we work through a long-established network of specialist suppliers, manufacturers and accredited testing houses across the UK. That network supports prototype hardware, specialist manufacture, independent inspection, formal testing and related engineering services.

Our work turns engineering intent into physical evidence cleanly and credibly. Long-term relationships across specialist supply, manufacturing and testing create a more controlled route from concept work to prototype, validation and development.

A true partnership

Whittaker Engineering and PTL worked together over 3 years to develop a unique 75 kW reciprocating piston heat pump from scratch. In the 3 years of working together there was not one instance of disagreement or frustration. It was a true partnership and friendship. The heat pump now has patents in the UK, Europe, USA and China. We are about to embark on the next stage of development and PTL will be an integral part of the team.

What we work on

PTL provides multi-physics analysis, advanced design skills, controls and electronics development, prototyping pathways, and procurement and supply-chain coordination.

Our engineering consultancy work spans:

  • Advanced engines and powertrains
  • Bespoke electric motors and motor-driven systems
  • Energy systems and harsh-environment applications
  • EV, hybrid and off-highway mobility programmes
  • Precision control systems, hydraulics and embedded controls
  • Industrial machinery and specialist development projects

Where required, we also support clients with technical substantiation for IP, patents, funding activity and investment decisions.

In practice, that includes design reviews, tolerance stacks, GD&T-based drawings, DFM and DFA input, feasibility studies, topology comparison, prototype planning, supplier liaison, test rig design, instrumentation and DAQ planning, commissioning support, and optimisation using measured data.

Experience across demanding applications

PTL’s background includes substantial engine and powertrain development activity, together with a broader base of engineering work across different applications and industries.

Past programmes include full engine design from clean sheet to pre-production, hydrogen ICE conversion, single-cylinder engine research platforms, cooling system evaluation, eBike development, dynamic bearing test rigs, battery pack design and analysis, industrial heat pump development, ultra-high-pressure diesel fuel injection and multiphase pump design.

Bespoke electric motor work has spanned demanding applications including switched reluctance motor development, e-motor work in a pressurised helium heat pump environment, concept studies for in-wheel motor architectures, and endurance and root-cause work on actuator systems where repeatable performance and evidence-based problem solving were critical.

Working on something complex?

If you’re developing a new engineering concept, preparing for prototype activity, or trying to reduce cost, complexity or technical uncertainty before the next decision point, our senior engineers can help you identify the risks and define a clear path forward.

We worked very closely with PTL in developing and licensing CVT drive concepts for the eBike market. PTL were an outstanding partner, applying advanced simulation techniques, developing innovative concepts and control software, and realising hardware prototypes. They were a responsive, reliable, and agreeable partner who I would thoroughly recommend.
