CASE STUDY

Proving Engine Concepts Before Full Programme Commitment

OVERVIEW

PTL supported Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in developing a range of single-cylinder engine (SCE) research platforms, covering both light/medium-duty and heavy-duty applications. These have been used for internal research and development, consortium projects, and third-party customers programmes, including gasoline, diesel and Hydrogen.

The challenge

Running full multicylinder engine development programmes can be extremely resource intensive. When basic questions are still open, bore and stroke, combustion strategy, cylinder pressures, fuelling approach, or even overall architecture, committing early to a complete engine architecture can increases both cost and technical risk. Single cylinder engines offer faster development times, improved experimental control, and lower cost whilst also being representative of the real-world mechanics and thermodynamics.

PTL’s role

PTL designed the SCE platforms, with SwRI, to be as flexible as possible, allowing them to be easily tailored to different research programs. The design work drew on the same core capabilities and skills used in full engine development: concept and detailed design, cranktrain and valvetrain analysis and design, advanced CAE, performance simulation, lubrication analysis, and research facility design. The combination of these PTL skill sets, together with our long history of engine design projects ensured the single cylinder platforms could provide quality data, suitable for research and development programs.

Why it mattered

A single-cylinder engine is only useful if there is high confidence in the data which it produces. The SwRI platforms have successfully supported a wide range of research and commercial work both internally and for customers.

For organisations facing major combustion or architecture decisions, a single cylinder platform allows fundamental questions to be answered, with confidence and with defendable data, before committing the resources required for a full engine programme.
