PTL carried out a thermal assessment of an experimental diesel injector concept in which the specific geometry exposed a much larger surface area to combustion gases than a conventional design. That exposure created an inherent heat management risk that needed to be quantified before the concept could progress.
PTL supported Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in developing a range of single-cylinder engine (SCE) research platforms, covering both light/medium-duty and heavy-duty applications. These have been used for internal research and development, consortium projects, and third-party customers programmes, including gasoline, diesel and Hydrogen.
PTL supported Southwest Research Institute in developing a dynamic bearing test rig capable of recreating crankshaft bearing loads on a crank-angle basis, generating the fast-changing, high-magnitude load profiles needed for credible bearing and lubrication validation.
PTL led an eBike development programme built around proprietary CVT technology. The core challenge was not whether the hardware could be made to function, but whether it could be made to feel natural, with a consistent pedalling response across different riders, riding styles and terrain conditions.
PTL carried out an evaluation of a vehicle cooling-system to help a customer understand how the circuit and subcomponents were behaving, identify where the deficiencies sat, and to determine which changes would make a practical difference.
PTL supported Southwest Research Institute as part of an industry-backed H₂ICE consortium project focused on converting a Cummins X15N natural gas engine to operate on port-injected hydrogen. Because CO₂ emissions from hydrogen ICE vehicles are by nature near zero, the consortium’s primary emphasis was on achieving competitive fuel economy and sharply reducing other regulated emissions, particularly NOₓ. The main objective was to demonstrate compliance with the California Air Resources Board’s voluntary Ultralow NOₓ designation in a Class 8 truck, a demanding application characterized by high loads, arduous duty cycles, and minimal tolerance for compromises in durability or packaging.
